What are Gate Valve?

A gate valve is a type of isolation valve used to start or stop the flow of fluid in a pipeline. It operates by raising or lowering a flat or wedge-shaped gate inside the valve body. When fully open, the gate is completely lifted out of the flow path, allowing unobstructed flow with minimal pressure loss. Because of this design, gate valves are ideal for on-off service rather than flow regulation.

Gate valves are typically constructed from materials such as cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, and various alloys to suit different pressure and temperature conditions. They are available with rising stem and non-rising stem designs, as well as solid, flexible, or split wedge configurations.
